As we age, our hormones will naturally decrease, affecting both men and women. For women, this is called menopause, and for men, andropause. Luckily, both are treatable with hormonal replacement therapy (HRT).
In treating menopause, the first thing we do is to conduct blood tests. Once we have a better understanding of your current hormone levels, we can better prepare an HRT treatment plan. Many treatments are based more so on treating your symptoms than your blood results but at Sinclair Healthcare, we treat the root cause and the symptoms.
For men, the major hormone is testosterone. As testosterone levels decline, men suffer from symptoms such as weight gain, insomnia, low libido, and erectile dysfunction, among others. Because testosterone is a controlled substance, it is highly regulated and makes hormone replacement therapy in men a bit more complicated than just administering more testosterone into the bloodstream. Since the body can convert testosterone into estrogen and dihydrotestosterone, it’s important to control the intake levels or any potential side effects.
Testosterone replacement in men can also cause your bone marrow to become overactive causing your blood to thicken over time. One suggestion we recommend to patients is to frequently donate blood to avoid blood clots, heart attacks, and stroke. Side effects of having too much testosterone can include, acne, oily skin, and other skin-related issues.
At Sinclair Healthcare, we are dedicated to finding the right balance to replace your hormones and get you back to a happier, healthier you. For more information on hormone treatment or to schedule an appointment, please don’t hesitate to contact us today at (561) 798-2002.
